(First In A Series Of Three)
Dear leftist,
No, actually, we're not all in this together. I'm out to abolish power. If, as a result, capitalism ceases to be, that's cool. But I'm not going to put the cart before the horse. The psychological and sociological underpinnings of our societal problems do not have blunt macroscopic solutions. I will not wait until After The Revolution to address the roots of everything wrong in this world. Capitalism is a symptom. Just as is your bullheaded populism, your alienating structures and subtle cliques. The interpersonal is not secondary but primary. Power is not a prize to be divvied up but a disease, a psychosis of paranoia and dehumanization adept at perpetuating itself.
If we put all of our energy into suppressing the symptoms, it's possible, we may in fact eliminate some of them, but the horrors that will inevitably resurge will be all the stronger for the time wasted. They might take on new--perhaps even diffuse--forms, but slaves we will remain.
I am not interested in democracy or localism. I find nothing liberating in work, community or identity. I will not bow to your idols. Unlike you I value life--that is to say active thought and the abolition of all barriers--above all else.
I believe that obligation and duty are as obscene and destructive a concept as has ever been foistered on the human race, a hollow rotting mockery of real love and compassion. I believe that one day you will realize this. Although, in all likelihood, it will probably be too late.
We have no common ground. At best we may find ourselves strategic allies, but we share nothing.
cordially,
your friendly neighborhood anarchist
